Position Description

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) seeks applicants to fill the position of Director of Academic Advising. The Director of Academic Advising will be responsible for oversight of multiple functions related to academic advising at the University of Maine at Farmington. The Director is responsible for the development and delivery of effective systems, programs, and services to help students determine and implement their academic plans, and to support faculty and staff across campus in their academic advising and related functions. The Director supervises the Academic Advising Department and helps to develop and participate in university efforts to support student enrollment and retention. Duties

Manages the Academic Advising department by:

Coordinating professional academic advising services and initiatives across UMF. Arranging for comprehensive staff coverage. Hiring, training, and supervising designated staff members. Assigning work, approving leave, completing performance evaluations, and issuing discipline as appropriate. Assisting with hiring, training, and supervising student employees. Serving as the on-campus contact person for the Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) representative. Serving as an ancillary supervisor for the first year and transfer advisors

Works collaboratively with faculty and staff by:

Coordinating an Advising Council for the University of Maine at Farmington. Leading centralized first-year registration. Serving as a liaison to academic colleges and programs, as appropriate. Representing the Department on appropriate internal committees and external organizations including, but not limited to: the Academic Policy Committee, Curriculum Committee, etc. Serving as a liaison to all groups and efforts touched by Academic Advising, such as (i.e., Academic Success Team (AST), Orientation, Admissions open houses, Career Services and Internships, Athletics, System-wide Advising Group (SWAG), etc.) Supporting faculty and staff in their advising responsibilities. Arranging for and providing professional development and training for academic advisors; this includes the use of common software for advisors (such as Navigate and Quick Enroll) Developing and disseminating advising tools (e.g., degree progress and resource materials to support student’s academic decision-making). Supporting the development/strengthening of Peer Academic Advising. Developing and implementing communication strategies to provide advisors with current and up-to-date information. Providing support to faculty during registration. Participating and assisting with campus events (i.e., new student orientation, etc.)

Works collaboratively with students by:

Providing formal and informal academic advising/coaching, (i.e., in person, via email, and online), including interpretation of placement test results and transfer advising for general student populations (matriculated and non-matriculated students). Providing information or referrals to students and the public regarding financial aid, veteran benefits, student internships, and student development activities. Advising up to ten (10) students; and instructing up to two (2) courses annually, as needed Providing academic counseling to students on academic probation. Administering the UMF Forgiveness Policy. Serving as the backup advisor, assisting students in challenging or urgent situations with their advisors.

Administrative work:

Developing and maintaining automated Degree Progress (degree audit) and planner components of MaineStreet. Developing and maintaining departmental web pages. Assessing and evaluating advising processes, procedures, and impacts/outcomes. Serving on special project teams, such as the Title III Grant. Managing a budget for the department of academic advising.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, and interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong computer literacy and competency including web-based applications and networks.
  • The ability to quickly learn and work effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, as well as working independently.
  • The ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively to complete tasks.
  • The ability to excel in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to react positively and effectively to change.
  • The ability to work effectively within a changing landscape of the campus, administrators/leadership, and strategy.
  • Master’s degree in student development, adult education, or other related discipline.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in academic advising or the equivalent combination of work in student services (e.g., mentoring, counseling).
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory or management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Student Development, Adult Education, or other related discipline.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working in higher education with first-generation college students, individuals with low income, and/or individuals with disabilities.
