Position Description

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) Undergraduate Advising Center, the position provides fundamental academic advising to prospective and current undergraduate students and uses the principles of developmental academic advising and a knowledge of teaching and learning theory to promote academic, career, and life goals in an effort to support student academic success, retention, timeliness to degree and intellectual and personal development. This Lead Advisor position is responsible for coordinating all communication for a particular CNAS major(s) with students, faculty, and enrollment staff to address curricular and enrollment challenges or needs. In addition, this position is the main point of contact, and generates data reports and recommendations to faculty, enrollment staff, and the department chair(s) to assist with short and long-term departmental planning. The Lead Advisor maintains and updates a specific major(s) publications, course offerings, four-year plans, degree summaries, and change of major criteria documents. The position reviews major changes, discontinuations, and degree confirmations for a particular major(s) and coordinates workshops and presentations to undergraduate students in the major and across the general CNAS population.

Duties

Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the department/school/college; Advises new and continuing instructors on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to departmental/school/college and/or Graduate Division requirements; Advises new and continuing instructors on student advising issues; Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department/school/college (e.g., academic probation, dismissal); Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs or when transfer work is involved; Participates in planning academic curriculum in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments, to ensure student's progress through course sequences, avoid conflicts, and ensure compliance with organization-wide policies; Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units; Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and/or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training; 4 - 7 years of related experience; Occasional travel for university related business meetings, conferences and/or professional development.Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools; Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving;Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems; Ability to multi-task; Thorough knowledge of department/school college policies, procedures, and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree; Strong communication skills (oral and writing) including speaking with clarity to individuals as well as conducting presentations for groups of 50-300; Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements.
