Position Description

School of Arts & Sciences-Newark is the second largest unit in the Rutgers system, with two colleges NCAS and UC-N, over 19 academic departments and programs, over 31 programs of study, over 4,000 undergraduate students, and over 1,000 faculty and staff. We serve all undergraduates at Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N); and offer a broad selection of more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate courses a year in more than 40 subjects. Posting Summary Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Student Counselor. Reporting to the Assistant Dean in the Office of Academic Services (OAS) in the School of Arts and Sciences-Newark (SASN), the Academic Advisor is a team member in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer service-focused environment.

Duties

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following: Provides academic advising and counseling to undergraduate students, assists them with problem solving, and teaches them to advocate for themselves; Establishes and maintains productive contact with assigned caseload of Newark College of Arts & Sciences (NCAS) and University College-Newark (UC-N) students to counsel them and facilitate their declaration of major, progress toward graduation, and successful career and/or professional development; Works with the OAS junior, senior, and transfer services team on the coordination, development, and facilitation of initiatives targeting students, including, and not limited to, workshops, transcript evaluations, new student registration and outreach, advanced placement credit assessment, and recruiting events; Coordinates the graduation certification process and liaises with academic departments and other student service offices to ensure all certifications are completed accurately and within the deadline provided; Works with all relevant personnel and offices to update and improve databases, software, programs, and workflow used in the certification process; Creates and facilitates initiatives for students in their junior and senior years, maintaining contact and communicating information in effective, efficient, and innovative manners; Serves as an Academic Integrity (AI) facilitator, communicates, supports, and upholds AI policies and procedures; Assists with office events, including, and not limited to, commencement activities, major/minor fair, as well as other events and duties as needed; Works in a manner that furthers the mission of OAS, SASN, and RU-N and contributes to strategic goals.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in student counseling, college student personnel, psychology, social work, education, higher education administration, or a related field and two years relevant experience in academic counseling/advisement; or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of transfer student populations and programs, student development and counseling theories and applications, and workshop design and presentation. Requires excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills; and the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks; Requires the ability to interact successfully and confidentially with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the University community; and strong computer literacy, including use of databases; Requires excellent problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to multitask and function autonomously with limited supervision; Must be able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer-service focused environment. Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite; Will use the Student Records Database (SRDB), degree audits, Maxient, in-house applications, and any database or program utilized by the University to perform the duties of this position now or in the future; Must be familiar with or learn the office equipment, software, and specialized programs and/or materials needed to support the effective and efficient performance of this position. OAS is a fast-paced, deadline-driven, customer service-focused environment; Responsibilities will include attendance at and participation in evening and weekend activities, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree and experience in a university or other educational setting with experience in program development and conducting workshops for diverse populations strongly preferred; Knowledge of academic integrity facilitation and degree audits also desired.
