Outstanding Advising Awards

The Outstanding Advising Awards annually recognize individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students or outstanding academic advising administration. All recipients will be honored at the Awards Ceremony held during the Annual Conference. Winners receive a complimentary basic registration for the Annual Conference, a recognition plaque, and a one-year membership in NACADA.  Certificates of Merit may be awarded to other nominees that deserve recognition, but did not score as high as the winners in the category.

If winners cannot attend the Annual Conference Awards Ceremony (not mandatory), their plaque will be mailed to them. Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit recipients receive a framed certificate that is mailed. Only award winners cross the podium and receive a plaque at the Awards Ceremony. Certificate of Merit recipients are invited to the Ceremony and are asked to stand at their tables for applause before the winners approach the podium.

What is Outstanding Advising?

This award recognizes effective advising qualities and practices that distinguish the recipient as an outstanding academic advisor or faculty advisor, including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:

Strong interpersonal skills

Mastery of institutional regulations, policies and procedures

Availability to advisees, faculty or staff

Ability to engage in, promote and support developmental advising

Frequency of contact with advisees

Evidence of advising in an academic advising program that supports NACADA’s Core Values

Appropriate referral activity

Evidence that the advising program reflects the standards of good practice in the CAS Standards and Guidelines for Academic Advising:

Use and dissemination of appropriate info sources

Participation in and support of advisor development programs

Evidence of student success rate, by advisor or department

Perception by colleagues of nominee’s advising skills

Caring, helpful attitude towards advisees, faculty and staff

Institutional recognition of nominee for outstanding advising

Meeting advisees in informal settings

Participation in and support of intrusive advising to build strong relationships with advisees

Monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals
