Position Description
- Join the dynamic team in the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center (Explore Center) to provide comprehensive academic advising services to Undeclared, Pre-Engineering, Pre-Health, and Pre-Law students.
- Provide academic and/or social support for first generation, low-income, and/or racially minoritized college students.
- Advise students transitioning between majors.
- Utilize excellent interpersonal communication and relational skills to help students explore and identify interests, skills, and abilities.
- Engage in collaborative advising conversations with students and share developmentally appropriate advice in regards to academic/course planning, extracurricular involvement/exploration, and professional preparation.
- Identify and provide support for students struggling academically and/or personally and make appropriate referrals to support resources.
- Be able to understand how cultural context, differences, and institutional/social barriers influence the student experience in order to apply inclusive advising strategies for all students.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of complex academic program requirements and academic policy information.
- Collaborate with the Explore Center team and other campus offices to engage in best practices and to develop programming to aid student retention and success efforts.
- Communicate with parents and/or professional contacts from outside the University and with faculty/staff in other University offices.
- Develop and deliver presentations to various sized audiences, which may include students, faculty, staff, and/or parents.
- Utilize various student information systems to assess student progress and record contacts in digital notes systems.
- Occasional evening and weekend advising required.
- Assist with the smooth operation of the Explore Center.

The Explore Center exists at the heart of student success and is part of the university's Undergraduate Education and Student Success Unit. As such, a major focus for Academic Advisors in the Explore Center is to provide essential planning and support to some of UNL's most at-promise students. Our students may not have majors, but they have a wealth of abilities that advisors help to engage toward success at UNL. We seek to be a validating agent in students' college journey and our services have significantly increased our students' retention and graduation rates.
