Position Description

The Division of Student Success (DSS) at the University of Tennessee seeks a visionary, collaborative, data-driven leader to serve as the Director of the Academic Success Center (ASC). The ASC is a vital hub for student support, offering a comprehensive suite of programs and services designed to empower students to achieve academic excellence. This includes individualized academic coaching, dedicated study spaces, supplemental instruction, peer-led learning initiatives, student outreach and engagement, and targeted support for first-generation college students. The ASC Director plays a critical role in shaping and leading the Center's mission and will develop and implement a strategic plan to ensure continuous improvement and innovation. The director position will oversee all ASC personnel, budget, facilities, and student services, fostering a high-performing and results-oriented environment. The director champions student success, advocating for the ASC at all levels and collaborating with DSS offices, academic colleges, and other stakeholders. This collaboration will ensure seamless student support services and contribute to university-wide efforts to enhance student retention and graduation rates. A commitment to data-driven decision-making will be crucial in evaluating and refining ASC programs and personnel effectiveness. Shaping campus leadership: Actively participate in the Vice Provost's leadership committee and other campus-level committees. A strong candidate will be a transformative leader who is collaborative, innovative, and data-driven.

Duties

- This role leads a team of staff and peer students, fostering a service-oriented culture while managing a budget and ensuring adherence to university guidelines.

- This leadership role shapes the unit's mission and vision alongside the Associate Vice-Provost, overseeing a dynamic new model of academic case management and proactive student support. Continuous learning through professional engagement is required to stay ahead of emerging trends in student success. Provide budget approval/authority of departmental funds - approximately $1.5 million.

- Builds strong relationships with campus departments to understand student and faculty needs while actively engaging in university events and committees. This leadership role also involves chairing the Vol Success Team steering committee and representing the unit as a public speaker on and off campus.

- This leader drives unit improvement by setting measurable goals, implementing assessments, and using data to refine programs. They communicate findings to leadership and stakeholders to ensure student needs are met. - Special assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience leading and implementing successful student success programs.

- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams, foster collaboration, and make data-driven decisions.

- Strong understanding of current trends and best practices in student success programming.

- Experience leading an office/unit that has provided student programming and/or front-line student services focused on student success.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

- Knowledge of student development theories, academic intervention/coaching models, student persistence and retention data/assessment and high-impact practices.

- Skills required include ability to analyze student academic performance and retention/persistence data, to lead & manage a large and diverse staff, to serve a large & diverse community of students, and to allocate fiscal & human resources effectively & responsibly.

- Skilled with technologies, systems, and tools common in higher education (e.g., Banner [SIS], Canvas [LMS], Tableau/Argos [reporting], Salesforce/Slate [CRM], etc.)

- Ability to organize and coordinate a structured, comprehensive, & proactive academic support services program for undergraduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience leading academic advising, academic coaching, or other academic interventions.

- Coursework in education administration/higher education/college student development.

- Experienced with high-traffic student services office. Proven ability to lead new initiatives across complex organizations.

- 7 years progressive experience KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

- Experience providing academic advising/coaching or tutoring/supplemental instruction.

- Budget management experience.

- Experience with program evaluation/assessment.
