DeRosa. NACADA Journal (2023) 43 (2): 121–135. Click here for the full article https://doi.org/10.12930/NACADA-22-43

This year’s conference theme pays tribute to Mr. Fred Rogers, who provided generations of children with a supportive, fun, and creative place to develop socially and emotionally. Each episode welcomed viewers to his neighborhood where they were told that they were liked just the way they were. Our college students, unfortunately, do not always encounter such welcoming, supportive communities. In our Common Reading, DeRosa (2023) uses Rendon’s (1994) theory of validation along with Hurtado and Carter’s (1997) sense of belonging as theoretical frameworks to examine if fostering validation/belonging leads to improved academic performance. Come discuss the ways in which shifting our advising interactions with students to asset-based dialogues and providing validation can enhance students’ sense of belonging, outcomes, and experiences.
