This event will explain the importance of peer tutors and mentors to the learning of STEM majors and how to integrate peer tutoring and mentoring into your advising. Best practices concerning peer tutoring and mentoring will also be shared.

The session could also examine how advisors can work together to address common challenges such as credit transfer discrepancies, program compatibility, and social integration into the university culture.

What are you Studying? Revisiting the Liberal Arts Brand and Identity

As advisors, we empower students to make the most informed academic decisions - helping them to understand and take ownership of their degree is a vital part of this process. For students pursuing a liberal arts education, this can be complex, with students often identifying with their major rather than the entirety of their often misunderstood liberal arts degree. This virtual presentation will focus on the efforts we have undergone and difficulties we have encountered, as advisors at UW-Madison, to foster a college-wide identity around the liberal arts and sciences within the College of Letters & Science. It will also include time for attendees to reflect on how the concept of a liberal arts education is - or is not - presented at their own institution.
