The Department of Microbiology is seeking a Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences Advisor. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position at Oregon State University. The Academic Advisor will provide academic advising for both on-campus and distance-degree (Ecampus) undergraduate students in the Department of Microbiology pursuing majors in Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences. The incumbent in this position will work with an experienced team of advisors, and will be expected to be knowledgeable about and capable of advising students regarding choices between the two programs.
The Microbiology undergraduate student population also includes students with interests in pursuing careers and advanced degrees in the Health Sciences field. Contact with students occurs in multiple formats including phone, email, and video-conferencing correspondence, as well as in-person advising as part of individual, group, and classroom settings.
Advising responsibilities will include support for program orientation courses which provide students with the resources to be successful in their academic career at OSU and in their chosen profession.

Duties
55% Academic Advising Undergraduate Students in the Department of Microbiology:
Provide one-on-one academic advising to students in the Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences undergraduate degree programs on baccalaureate core and major requirements related to degree completion. Assist students in defining and developing expressed educational and career plans, and promote learning opportunities that help students define or meet these goals. Develop a purposeful relationship with and be an advocate for student advisees. Monitor progress toward of student caseload to degree completion and meeting educational and career goals Engage in proactive student outreach and intervention strategies designed to improve undergraduate academic success and student persistence. Interpret, explain, and provide timely and accurate educational information regarding institutional policies, procedures and requirements Assist students with course selection and registration, career counseling, resolving problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites, mentoring students in negative standing, enforcing university and college academic standards, suggesting corrective actions when necessary. Guide students to campus resources and special services available to them; refer students to resources that can enhance or supplement their academic or personal experience. Orient new incoming first-year and transfer students to university and department procedures, resources and support, which includes organizing and participating in START sessions.
20% Health Professions Advising Provide one-on-one health professions advising to students in the Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences undergraduate degree programs who are on a health professional’s program track and seeking admissions to limited entry health professions programs (Pre-Med, Pre-Physician’s Assistant, Pre-Dental, Pre-Clinical Lab Science, etc.). Cultivate expertise on health professions programs, admissions requirements and course prerequisites, and experience/skill building. Guide students through various professional program application processes, collecting letters of recommendation, uploading electronic documents, advising students on completing health professions admissions exams (MCAT, DAT, PCAT, etc.). Write letters of recommendation.
20% Academic Advising Programming & Department Support Collaborate with department faculty, advising team, and leads to identify programmatic needs and/or knowledge gaps and work in partnership to develop and implement necessary supports. Develop and maintain referrable resources to support student success in degree completion. Serve as advisor/department contact for student organizations/clubs within the department or interest in health sciences (e.g., the BHS club). Cultivate expertise on shared technology and resources that are part of the students’ academic journeys. Facilitate orientation courses and support New Student programming development and implementation within the department. Providing requested data, recommendations, and feedback regarding barriers to student success to advising leads, dept. curriculum council, faculty, campus partners, and college. Prepare and maintain advising materials such as programs, checklists, newsletters, and websites. Participate in department, college, and university meetings as assigned. Serve on Microbiology, COS, and/or University committees to support the Department of Microbiology in efforts to serve and support undergraduate students.
5% Professional Development Participate in professional development workshops, trainings, and conferences to maintain currency within academic advising and health professions advising Maintain membership with professional organizations such as NAAHP, WAAHP, etc. Regularly participate and seek out professional development opportunities to advance one’s own learning and implementation of best practices, social justice, equity, access and inclusion. Participate in university trainings to maintain and expand expertise in academic advising resources and software.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Two or more years of full-time employment as a professional academic advisor in a college or university setting.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating programs or projects either as a member of a team or independently.
- Professional experience assisting diverse learners, including non-traditional, online, international students, and underrepresented groups.
- Demonstrated commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and a commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of audiences (students, staff, faculty and administrators).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills (e.g., attention to detail, proofreading for accuracy, consistency, ability to lead presentations, interviewing skills, etc.).
- Demonstrated computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with student information and/or customer relationship management systems (e.g. MyDegrees, Banner, Peoplesoft, Slate, Salesforce, Core, Navigate, etc.)
- Degree in fields such as General Science or Life Sciences degrees (e.g., Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Molecular Biology, Zoology)
- Master’s or doctoral degree in Higher Education Administration, Advising, Education, General Science or Life Science related field.
- Previous professional experience in a career field related to life sciences.
- Knowledge related to application and admissions processes to health professional schools, such as medicine, dentistry or pharmacy.
