Position Description

About the Career & Student Success Advisor Role: The Career and Student Success Advisor is a proactive team member providing innovative and intentional academic and career advising to prospective and current students. This position contributes directly to the Polytechnic’s vision of building students’ capacity for brilliance, and supports learners by curating individualized support, refined employability skill, increasing institutional retention, persistence, and more. The incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to understanding, respecting, and engaging with diverse perspectives and identities through an intersectional lens, and must be skilled in addressing the needs of a diverse student population. The incumbent applies theories of learning, student development and career development through individualized advising strategies and case management to successfully support students throughout their life cycle while at Humber. Through following professional best practices for academic and career advising, the incumbent works with students who have not yet declared a major program, who are seeking to change programs, or who are experiencing academic difficulty, and to other students as required. The incumbent will use a holistic approach grounded in development, intrusive and lifecycle theory and practice, designed to effectively address intersecting needs and support student success. This position will identify and support students at risk of attrition and provide early-intervention through proactive advising. The incumbent must be adept at connecting a student’s academic choices to their career choices. This is done by focusing on students’ career development and preparation for the labour market through one-on-one coaching/advising, including: facilitating and interpreting personal interest/strengths and skills assessments; job search training; workshops and seminars; external marketing to employers; internal and community liaison; and ongoing labour market research. The incumbent then works with the student to form and clarify meaningful plans and set goals by developing individualized academic and career success plans that leverage available resources and campus support services. The Career and Student Success Advisor collaborates closely with Faculties and service areas to strategically support student learning based on the specific and unique faculty needs. In addition, the Advisor must possess enough knowledge to support students in all faculties as part of the Hub and Spoke advising model. The incumbent will liaise with faculty and staff for the purpose of understanding issues, case conferencing to support an advisee, making meaningful referrals, and sharing information critical to creating a quality advising experience for students. In addition, the Career and Student Success Advisor is responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering on-campus presentations, creating academic and career advising resources, or contributing to departmental initiatives and projects that meet faculty and student needs. The incumbent is expected to assist in training and demonstrating correct procedures and advising processes to fellow advisors on campus as they are connected to the institutional hub for advising.

Duties

Career and Student Success Advising: Provide academic and career advising in person, email or virtually to support student retention and persistence initiatives.

· Advise student on best course of action using individualized approach based on student’s identity, values, strengths, interests and goals.

· Apply an equity and inclusion lens to advising practice to identify and evaluate barriers faced by students with diverse needs, in order to achieve success in academic, personal or curricular issues

Goal Setting: Collaborate with student to define and achieve personal, academic and career goals through developing individualized student success plans

Client Management: Follow-up with students to ensure they are on track to academic or career success based on established success plans

Assessments: facilitate & interpret a variety of student assessments and their applicability to students’ unique academic and career goals

· Career Management: help prepare students for employment through one on one or group facilitated coaching, including labour market information and best practices in job search strategies

· Help students explore career opportunities and educational pathways related to their current and future goals

· Recommend and implement improvements to advising tools and resources, addressing areas of needs or gaps in service

· Be knowledgeable and up to date about College policies and procedures to assist students with navigating institutional expectations and processes

· Create, maintain and update the client data in the CRM system

· Analyze and report on comprehensive statistics to monitor industry trends

· Learn new technology, tools and virtual advising platforms to support students

· Support the transition and on-going needs of WSIB sponsored learners as per Humber’s agreement including regular appointments, case notes and detailed reporting

· Participate in and seek out opportunities for professional development related to career and academic advising skills based on industry trends and student needs Triage, Referrals and Case Management

· Assess and analyze student needs to determine appropriate interventions

· Build strong relationships with faculty and services professionals and ensure to have an up to date knowledge of services available, access, and contacts

· Use effective communication skills to seek advice, share information and make seamless and efficient referrals

· Advocate on behalf of students with faculty and campus services to support student success

· Coordinate case meetings with students, faculty and services professionals to resolve student issues and develop success plans to impact student persistence and retention

· Assist with Marketing Strategies Assist with developing, designing and implementing marketing strategies to build stakeholder and student awareness.

· Contribute to the development of a departmental marketing strategy for various services offered (advising, career support, job portal, etc.)

· Develop content and student-facing resources for academic and career success · Make recommendations for improvements of marketing and resources

· Maintain and update resources (print and electronic) Event/Workshop Planning and Coordination Participate in the development and delivery of numerous campus events including: student success workshops, student engagement events, ) professional development and networking events, Faculty-led initiatives, career fairs, and institutional committees.

· Develop customized educational or career-related workshops based on special request and/or to meet target populations, including mature, international, students with disabilities, First Generation, youth, as well as program-specific content

· Coordinate event logistics: event promotion, order food, organize parking, coordinate facilities needs, liaising with external partners, etc. Employ experiential learning techniques to engage students

· Represent the department for campus wide events/committees providing information and materials on relevant services and supports Participate in Ongoing Assessment and Evaluation Maintain accurate records of advising appointments including detailed case notes using designated client management system.

· Administer evaluation of advising services to students to ensure quality of service and to achieve desired departmental outcomes

· Evaluate and analyze evaluation forms to look for trends, challenges and successes and make recommendations to manager for improvement

· Complete reporting on a semesterly/annual basis as directed by management

· Contribute to the collection of relevant data and feedback for departmental initiatives such as class visits, workshops, outreach campaigns, etc. Outreach Campaigns and Faculty Partnerships Liaise with faculty and staff on the coordination of student outreach to support retention initiatives (e.g. early intervention outreach, academic standing and low grade outreach, and/or reaching out to target populations such as: late-applicants, late-arrivals, mature students, students with disabilities and first-generation students)

· Effectively communicate with faculty regarding student cases to ensure student needs are met

· Participating in college wide planning, strategic retention and enrolment initiatives and events as required

· Attend faculty meetings to share departmental resources, best practices, service information, find opportunities for collaboration

Other duties as assigned. These include activities relating to the success of the integrated advising model; departmental and faculty-specific meetings and initiatives, HSSS and KPI surveys, on campus recruitment events, new student transition activities such as Orientation, job fairs, graduate and alumni events, as well convocation.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Education: • 4-year degree (or equivalent) in HR, Psychology, Education, Sociology, Career and Work Counsellor Programs (or similar).

Additional Requirements: The incumbent will have a certificate (or completed course work) in academic advising or career coaching offered through (but not limited to): National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), Career Educator Certificate Program (CACEE), CERIC, NACE, Conestoga, Fanshaw, George Brown, University of Calgary etc. As a guideline, completed coursework should total between 101 and 520 hours.

Experience:

• Minimum of three (3) years practical experience in academic and/or career advising (Direct advising experience preferred).

• Experience with the use of CRM or client management system, collecting and maintaining a database, use of tools/assessments, working with diverse populations, and utilizing digital media platforms for student/client engagement and communication.
