Position Description

Job Summary: The Center for Academic Advising & Retention is currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position:

Senior Advisor

The Senior Advisor directs people, processes, and projects related to college, major-specific, pre-professional, and/or undecided advising for students through their EWU journey. This position provides professional advising leadership to ensure students develop academic plans that are consistent with their life, career, and educational goals. Our holistic approach to student development requires professional advisors to build and sustain ongoing educational relationships with the students that promote persistence, encourage resiliency, and improve academic achievement. The Senior Advisor will consult regularly with university faculty, staff, and administration to maintain up-to-date awareness of university programs, information, technologies, and procedures; conduct group presentations/classes; and assist in planning and maintaining overall advising program. The Senior Advisor will work closely with advising leadership to develop discipline specific advisor training materials for student success advisors and faculty. The salary for this position is $48,209 (minimum) up to $57,851. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on qualifications, education, experience, and skills. Responsibility / Duty:

TEAM LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

  • Supervises professional academic advisors, lead search committees, manage hiring processes, train and mentor advisors, oversee professional development, and assess advisor performance.
  • Collaborate with advising leadership and college administration to guide academic advising initiatives, including implementing and maintaining new advising models as the institution evolves.
  • Participate in college administrative team meetings, faculty/staff gatherings, and departmental events as required.
  • Drive adoption of university technology platforms among students and staff, including Navigate, Degree Works, and other tools.
  • Gather and analyze data, producing comprehensive reports for designated areas.
  • Supervise assessment and evaluation efforts to gauge the effectiveness of programming and outreach.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions and professional development opportunities for both professional and faculty advisors, in conjunction with advising leadership and campus partners.
  • Work closely with campus collaborators to maintain and enhance advising resources, tools, and information.

ASSIST IN PLANNING , DELIVERY , AND ASSESSMENT OF OVERALL ADVISING PROGRAM

  • Provide comprehensive information, training, and development sessions for supervising advisors, advising teams, faculty, and staff to ensure a knowledgeable advising community at EWU .
  • Develop and execute communication strategies to foster collaboration between college departments, the Center for Academic Advising and Retention, and other university offices. • Collaborate with university stakeholders to stay updated on program information, technologies, and procedures. • Utilize technology to identify and devise intervention strategies for students requiring assistance.
  • Conduct group presentations and workshops to enhance advising knowledge and skills.
  • Organize and execute campus events as directed by leadership.
  • Work with campus partners to maintain current academic planning and advising technology.

DIRECT STUDENT SUPPORT

  • Identify and support students facing graduation or enrollment barriers, ensuring timely resolution and communication with college leadership.
  • Provide support and guidance to advisors dealing with complex advising scenarios, prioritizing student-centered solutions.
  • Assist advisors in specialized advising for programs with competitive application processes, collaborating with academic department staff.
  • Assist with managing the university’s Early Warning System, promptly addressing student needs, and ensuring appropriate referrals.
  • Participate in probation/dismissal/reinstatement procedures, attending meetings and advising students as necessary.
  • Serve as a backup advisor, handling urgent advising needs and communications.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree (any field).
  • Three (3) years of experience in academic advising or related work.
  • Two years of leadership experience.
  • Work experience utilizing theory-based practices to facilitate student success inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a positive, collaborative manner to build partnerships and work effectively as a contributing member of an advising team in a fast-paced, high-stress university/college system.
  • Demonstrated experience using computer technologies such as databases, internet, spreadsheets, tracking systems, and word processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and time while under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related fields such as adult education, academic advising, or counseling.
  • Two years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience in a college or university setting teaching college success strategies workshops or classes.
  • Professional advising experience of students in a college or university setting which includes a focus on advising, persistence, retention, or student success programs.
  • Fluency in a second language.
