Position Description

This position primarily involves advising of undergraduate students in the Seidman College of Business. Activities include acting as a resource for current students planning their degree programs, advising appropriate coursework and sequencing, interacting with prospective students and their families, attending recruitment events, maintaining student records, and other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean. This is a two-year position with the intent to move to permanent funding. The position is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the option of up to two (2) days of remote work after the initial training period is complete, with supervisor approval. The position may have occasional evening or weekend hours. The location may be on the Allendale and Grand Rapids campuses.

Duties

Provide academic advising for students in Seidman programs/majors at the downtown Pew Campus with one (1) day a week serving students at the Allendale Campus. (80%)

  • Answer questions regarding degree requirements and curriculum
  • Set up or review degree progress plans
  • Assistance with course selection and registration questions or issues
  • Assistance with understanding and following university policies and procedures
  • Serve as a point of contact for anyone interested in Seidman Business programs
  • Provide outreach and support to students in academic jeopardy
  • Provide information regarding additional resources, programs, and services that will aid student success
  • Referrals to the appropriate department or person for further assistance, when necessary

Administrative Responsibilities (20%)

  • Maintain student advising records
  • Represent Seidman at recruiting events and college fairs
  • Represent Seidman Student Academic Services on committees and taskforces as deemed appropriate
  • Support Seidman Student Academic Services processes for student outreach, support, assessment, etc.
  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.

Institution Information

  • Earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year university.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Strong understanding of and demonstrating a desire for collaborative approaches to problem-solving. 
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work autonomously as well as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Earned master’s degree in education, college student development, adult and higher education, or related field.
  • Experience in academic advising and mentoring.
  • Familiarity with trends and best practices in advising and student success.
  • Familiarity with computer information systems and web-based records and registration, particularly Banner, Degree Works, Workday (Student), and/or EAB Navigate.
