Position Description

The Senior Director of Academic Advising at Missouri S&T is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and enhancing the academic advising program across the university. This role requires strategic leadership, operational management, and the development and implementation of best practices to support student success. The Senior Director will lead the Advising Counsel, supervise the Success Coach focused on academic major changes, and ensure a unified advising framework that leverages course sequencing and degree progression tools.

Duties

Leadership and Oversight:

  • Lead and facilitate the Advising Counsel, setting strategic direction and ensuring effective collaboration among advisors.
  • Supervise and provide mentorship to the Success Coach responsible for assisting students in changing academic majors.
  • Ensure consistency in advising practices across departments by implementing a common advising framework.
  • Establish career exploration practices to help students identify if their program of choice is best suited for them.

Advising Framework and Tools:

  • Oversee the use of course sequencing and degree progression software to ensure accurate and effective advising. This includes vetting current systems for efficiency and user-access, potentially onboarding a more relevant model.
  • Monitor and support ongoing maintenance of advising tools and systems, working closely with the Registrar, IT, and other relevant departments.

University-wide Processes:

  • Establish and manage a university-wide dismissal board and appeal process, ensuring fair and consistent handling of student cases.
  • Develop strategies to address and mitigate waitlists, working with departments to improve course availability and student access.

Policy and Training Development:

  • Create and implement academic advising policies and practices, ensuring alignment with university goals and standards.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for advisors, including workshops, seminars, and resources to enhance advising effectiveness and consistency.
  • Implement education and practices for advisors to discuss and encourage student participation with prestigious scholarships and fellowships.

Assessment and Improvement:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of academic advising practices through data analysis, feedback, and assessment tools.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the quality of advising services and student outcomes.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with academic departments, student services, and other stakeholders to promote a cohesive advising approach.
  • Communicate advising policies, procedures, and updates clearly to advisors, students, and other university stakeholders.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $91,125-$144,102 annually. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

A master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 8 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in academic advising or related student services, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role is preferred.
